First of all you need to get lots of traffic. Try www.wherecaniadvertise.com to help with that. Then once you get traffic to the site, as you said, you need to limit the number of links you have off the page, so people will see the ad links, it is also useful to blend the ad links in with the same color co-ordination of your other links.
